Preparing for Your Newborn Session at Home

The Best Time to Schedule Your Newborn Photoshoot

The ideal time for newborn photography is within the first 5 to 14 days after birth. During this window, babies are typically sleepier and more easily posed, allowing us to capture those dreamy, curled-up shots.

Tip: It’s best to book your session during your third trimester. Once your baby arrives, we’ll confirm a date that works best for you and your family.

Preparing Your Home for the Session

Since the session takes place in the comfort of your own home, a little preparation goes a long way:

  • Choose a Bright Space: Natural light is key! Identify a room with large windows and plenty of daylight—usually the living room or master bedroom works best.

  • Tidy Up the Area: You don’t need a spotless house, but clearing clutter from the photo area helps keep the focus on your baby and family.

  • Minimize Distractions: Turn off TVs, silence phones, and keep pets in another room if possible to create a calm, quiet environment.

  • Warmth is Key: Babies love warmth. We may suggest turning up the heat slightly or using a space heater to keep your baby cozy and sleepy.

What to Have Ready

  • Feed Baby Before the Session: A full tummy helps your baby stay content and sleepy.

  • Keep Outfits Simple: Neutral onesies, wraps, or even just a diaper can be perfect. I’ll bring a few props and wraps as well.

  • Sentimental Items: Feel free to include special blankets, toys, or heirlooms you’d like photographed.

Capturing the First Moments: Why Newborn Photography Matters

These early days are fleeting. Newborn photography allows you to freeze time and hold onto the tiny details—wrinkled toes, sleepy yawns, and the way your baby fits perfectly in your arms. These images become cherished keepsakes for years to come.

Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, every newborn session is a celebration of love, life, and new beginnings. I’m honoured to help you tell your family’s story.
